Beyond written records, the evidence of how horrific the situation was is everywhere, in the desiccated and forgotten bodies lying in gurneys, in the rooms full of the skeletons of the dead, and of roaming, clicking infected. Desperation, fear, confusion and despair permeate every document she grabs. During her search, Abby finds notes left behind by the people who lived and perished during those hellish days. Hundreds of infected people were sent to hospitals in an attempt at treating and containing the disease. Unsurprisingly, hospitals were ground zero of the Cordyceps outbreak. There are two ways in which boss-type monster encounters can enhance a game’s story: by giving us a deeper understanding of the world in which the game takes place (I’ll just call this “lore”) and by pushing along a character’s arc in a unique way. The different ways in which video games tell stories is one of the main reasons I like the medium so much. There are people out there who are fine playing games without regard for the underlying context or story being told. The storytelling aspect might not matter to you, personally. In trying to decide which monster I think was better in the context of its game, I’ll look into how they contributed to storytelling, gameplay and in eliciting certain reactions and emotions from players. It depends on what each monster achieves in adding to its respective game. The question I want to answer in this post is: which monster was better? The preliminary answer is, “it depends”. Without these particular monsters, neither game would have been the same. Still, ask any player who has experienced RE2 or TLoU2 to recount the most striking parts about either game and they are bound to mention Mr X (officially named Tyrant, but I’ll refer to it as Mr X) and the Rat King. Encounters like the first licker in RE2 or the stalkers in the office building during Ellie’s Seattle Day 2 in TLoU2 are unsettling and make the games more memorable. Ditto for The Last of Us (Part I and II) if you were to remove both infected and human enemies. The Last of Us Part 2 features many gruesome foes You're going to need to unleash everything you have: pipe bombs, shotgun blasts, any flamethrower fuel, you need to use it all just to have any chance of survival. The Rat King doesn't have a "weakness" in the sense that the others do. As such, it's not so much a stage of infected as it is a horrifying, unnatural anathema. Multiple infected, including at least one Bloater and one Stalker, have fused together, resulting into a multiple-armed, multiple-mouthed abomination. Named for the rare Rat King phenomena that has taken place in the animal kingdom, the Rat King is the stuff of nightmares.
